Reading a book opens a doorway into another world according to my 10 year old son, “The U”. A good book to him has great details and is way better than doing the other school work like math. My kids are great readers I often turn to books for teaching important lessons without it looking like I am trying to teach them something. Nutrition is a big subject that I can’t get my own children to listen to me about. They would be happy to eat hotdogs and cake for every meal if I would let them.
Bark Interpreter Judith Johnson has written a new book “Feeling Great with Jasper State, Eat Your Green Things”. Jasper State is a little dog that comes home with two young kids, David and Dana for an afternoon. He’s on a mission from the FDA – the Food and Doggie Administration – to help kids eat a nutritious meal. He shows the kids his mighty strength and his lighting fast speed skills. They marvel at his “super powers” wondering how such a tiny dog could do these things. Jasper State tells them his secret, which really isn’t a secret at all. He teaches David and Dana a song to help them eat their vegetables.
My girls loved the book and now believe that dogs really can talk to little kids. Unfortunately Cord will not touch any vegetable of any kind. She finds the idea of vegetables intriguing. She loves to listen to her older brother read the story and we enjoy playing the CD in the car. It’s such a catchy little tune that they have picked up quickly. My oldest daughter, Mad, loves to eat broccoli and peas. The U still won’t eat any greens, well, he said he will eat celery now because he didn’t know he could add peanut butter to it before. I’ve yet to see this happen, but he said he ate it at school since reading this book and for that I am thrilled!
