When the weather begins to get cold I start to crave soup. In the past I used to make soup with a lot of heavy cream. Now I make soup with 1% milk to try and lighten my favorite recipes up. With 4 kiddos running around and me running around with them for their activities I don’t always have the time to make soup when I get a craving. I’m not very picky about watching points, but for those of you doing Weight Watchers they are 100 calories and 2 points per serving so 200 calories or 4 points per can.
Progresso has two new light creamy style recipe soups out now that I was able to try. The first is Creamy Potato with Bacon & Cheese and the second is Chicken Pot Pie Style.
Light Chicken Pot Pie Style: At least 33% fewer calories than regular ready-to-serve soups. Light Creamy Potato with Bacon & Cheese: 50% fewer calories than the leading potato, cheese, and bacon ready-to serve soup.
I don’t know about you, but when I eat Progresso soup I still feel hungry and unsatisfied. If you think about your most recent dining out experience, most likely the restaurant serves a bowl of soup (which is more than a cup sized serving) or a cup of soup with a half a sandwich. So when I think about having soup I try to eat like I would in a restaurant. Paired with a sandwich, salad or added on to my meal like I would order when I go out.
I made grilled cheese and ham sandwiches for dinner the other night and paired it with Light Creamy Potato with Bacon & Cheese. I didn’t think my kids would love the soup, but I was surprised that they almost didn’t share it with me! It isn’t thick and creamy like you are probably craving, but if you are looking for something to take the edge off to eat healthier than this would be a great option. I had wish the can had said chunky potato soup, but they were the perfect bite size pieces. I would eat this soup again. The flavors were there and it isn’t heavy which makes it a great lunch choice.
Light Chicken Pot Pie Style reminds me of a broth based soup with a splash of milk for creaminess. I have been dying to try this soup because I love the thought of chicken pot pie, but I am rarely happy with the outcome. I popped it in my microwave for a couple of minutes for a quick lunch between cleaning projects. It’s cold out and I just want something warm and comforting. This soup was a pleasant surprise. It tastes creamy but not heavy. Like all canned soups I wished I had more vegetables and meats, but this soup did have the chunky veggie and meat aspect that I was desiring. I would certainly pick this up again to have on hand for a chilly day.
